The big majority of dryer fabrics are woven. This may be due to the fact that, from a historical point of view, woven dryer fabric has been closely linked to the development of paper production than the other fabric types. Moreover, nonwoven fabrics and fabrics manufactured with other methods do not meet the same wide range of requirements as woven dryer fabric do.

The main characteristics which allow the differentiation of woven dryer fabric and have a direct influence on the requirements are:

·raw material
·types of yarns
·yarn crimping and floating
·number of warp and filling layers
·density

The choice of raw material depends on the specific requirements that have to be met in a special position. Therefore, different raw materials may be combined in the same polyester mesh such that the positive characteristics of one raw material make up for the negative characteristics of another.

This type of combination is frequently used for slight to medium strength hydrolysis conditions: polyester is combined with another hydrolysis resistant material such as PPS. Raw materials in the order of the fabric structure depends on the application of fabric. For example, in the case of slight to medium strength hydrolysis environment, it is advisable to use all hydrolysis resistant raw materials on the fabric surface since it is the place where hydrolysis usually attacks. Such a sequence can be chosen for the whole fabric width or just for the edge areas.

Regarding the yarn types, woven dryer fabric may be roughly subdivided into two categories, regardless of any other characteristics: monofilament and multifilament fabrics.
